E... last but not least si sta pensando anche a qualche incontro di accostamento all’arabo e al cinese. Buon anno a tutti i poliglotti. Laura Zuzzi Direttore Irse

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ENGLISH? THE NATIVES SPEAK OUT!
Simon Marshall, Director of Teacher Training at Pilgrims, Canterbury

In this presentation stereotypical images of “the English” will be analysed, questioned and even deconstructed. In the current socio political climate it seems that people are comfortable with their Scottishness, Irishness and Welshness but when it comes to being English, the issue is far more complicated. The content of this interactive seminar will arise from a variety of personal anecdotes and established texts on this controversial subject.

THE TRIESTINE JOYCE
John McCourt, Vice-Director of Joyce School, Trieste

James Joyce wrote most of his work outside of Ireland, and in particular a large part of it in Trieste. John McCourt, an Irishman who settled in Trieste, and who has worked on Joyce related material for over ten years, has recently published “James Joyce Gli Anni Di Bloom” (Mondadori) (winner of the Comisso Prize). “Gli Anni di Bloom” is an extended version of his 2000 “The Years of Bloom: James Joyce in Trieste 1904-1920”. His book explores the influence of Trieste’s mixed MiddleEuropean culture on Joyce’s writings and, thanks to his book, the presence of Joyce is far more deeply felt in Trieste now than it once was. McCourt is also co-founder of the Trieste Joyce School and was part of a team which mapped all the Joycean sites in the city and created a numbered Joycean itinerary that tourists can follow around the city. He is also among the founders of the Trieste Joyce Museum, which contains some first editions of Joyce’s work, and also a virtual tour of Joyce’s Trieste.

SCIENCE IN THE SHADOW OF THE MINARET
Faheem Hussain, Pakistani physicist, The Abdus Salam International Centre
for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Trieste

It is time that science flourishes once again in the Islamic countries. This is the sense of the appeal, of two distinguished Pakistani scientists, published recently in the journal Nature. Science and Islam, the past and the future of a rich, productive relationship. We will talk about this and other matters with Faheem Hussain, a student of the Nobel Prize winner Abdus Salam, and who is now working at the ICTP in Trieste. Before coming to Trieste he was a professor of physics for many years in Islamabad where he contributed to the construction of the school of physics in Pakistan.

FROM LEONARDO TO FERRARI: THE FASCINATION OF FLUID TURBULENCE
Joseph Niemela, staff scientist,The Abdus Salam International Centre for
Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Trieste

The swirling motions of turbulent fluids, whether the roiling water of a cascading river, the air streaming over a wing, or the revolving hydrogen gas of distant galalingua xies, have long been a source of curiousity. Leonardo da Vinci considered the flow of turbulent fluids in the 15th century, and today it figures prominantly in engineering and in the basic sciences, from Formula 1 design to the Big Bang.

THE SPECKLED PEOPLE: A MEMOIR OF A HALF-IRISH CHILDWOOD

Incontro con Isabella Zani, traduttrice, a cura di Maria Cristina Parzianello “We wear Aran Sweaters and Lederhosen. We are forbidden from speaking English. We are trapped in a language war.We are the Speckled People.” In one of the most original memoirs to emerge in years, Hugo Hamilton tells the haunting story of his German-Irish childhood in 1950s Dublin. His Gaelic-speaking, Irish nationalist father rules the home with tyranny, while his German-speaking mother rescues her children with cakes and stories of her own struggle against Nazi Germany. Out on the streets of Dublin is another country, where they are taunted as Nazis and subjected to a mock Nuremberg trial. Through the eyes of a child, this rare and shockingly honest book gradually makes sense of family, language, and identity, unlocking at last the secrets that his parents kept in the wardrobe.
